It is widely distributed throughout the temperate and tropical areas around the world. The genus Urtica is derived from word ‘uro’ which means to burn or ‘urere’ which means to sting. Due to the fact that the plant typically either have, male or female blooms, the species name is dioica which means “two households. Apart from various traditional uses it is reported for the treatment of diabetes.
